AA Bondy
One day I was walking through the pines and heard the sound of a boot keeping time on some contrivance of wood. Keeping on I then heard a lonesome voice and a piano playing. I reached the edge of a clearing and saw a small house set against a stand of tall oaks. Sometimes the forest sways in time. The black-haired figure responsible for the ruckus shouted me a "hey there" and I crossed the field to make his acquaintance.

Death Vessel
This collection of music was written and sung by Joel Thibodeau. It is unlike anything you've ever heard. People will call it many things. Few will get it right. This is Death Vessel. Nothing is Precious Enough for Us exudes a unique ambition wider in scope than most of its peers. The musical reach is fully extended - deep into the past, grounded in the present and nodding to the future. Owing to the gritty avarice of Joel's singular spirit, voice and musicality, the songs - though rooted in a more traditional feel of folk and early Americana - sound as progressive, experimental and modern as they do antique and old-world.

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele
You may have heard of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, a new pop musician from Oxford, Mississippi. If not, you'll be hearing a lot from him in the coming year. Dent's unique vocal style, part crooner, part falsetto, and 101 percent showman reflects the influences of some of his favorite singers (Prince, Serge Gainsbourg, and Lee Hazlewood to name a few). His love of various song styles results in a unique combination of ukulele, drums, pedal steel, violin, horns and bass. One second his songs hint at Brazilian Tropicalia, the next a '50s barbershop quartet or an early 20th century country swing.

A woman sets aside an upright bass to pick up a copper tuba adorned with glowing red lights. She left a traveling civil war recreationist band to find a home here. The drummer stands up behind his kit and lifts a trumpet to his mouth. Raised by Lithuanian polka musicians, he skipped a treatment center in Mexico to right himself in the study of mariachi horns. Bon Iver
Bon Iver (pronounced: bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong on purpose) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. It is a new statement of an artist moving on and establishing the groundwork for a lasting career. For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut of this lineage of songs. As a whole, the record is entirely cohesive throughout and remains centered around a particular aesthetic, prompted by the time and place for which it was recorded. Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, seems to have tested his boundaries to the maximum, and in doing so has managed to break free from any pre-cursing or finished forms.

Mike Watt and The Missingmen
I put the missingmen together in the summer of 2006 in order to bring forth my third punk rock opera "hyphenated-man" (the first two being 1997's "contemplating the engine room" and 2004's "the secondman's middle stand"). whereas "...engine room" dealt w/my pop's life in the navy as a metaphor for the story of the minutemen and "...middle stand" was a parallel to dante's "comedia" dealing w/an illness that almost killed me in 2000, this third opera will be quite different in that it has no standard narrative (libretto!) meaning no regular beginning-middle-end and will be as it were "simultaneous" in the way a mirror from just inside my head - right in this middle-age moment of mine - was then shattered into thirtynine pieces, each showing a piece of my state of mind (or out-of-mind) as of now.

The Walkmen
The music that inspired the Walkmen to compose You and Me follows in a tradition of song writing that goes back to early rock 'n' roll: the intimacy and energy of Elvis Presley's and Buddy Holly's early recordings, and the massive voice and orchestration of Roy Orbison. And it carries on through people like Bob Marley and Randy Newman and on to bands like The Pogues and The Modern Lovers - the sort of songs that are very much a product of their time and place while firmly rooted in tradition.

Fences
Fences started in 2004, in Boston, the day Chris Mansfield thought, "I figured I might as well name this group of songs I'd been writing and have something to do with myself." He, like his music, is nothing if not brutally honest. Mansfield was a student of jazz at the Berklee College of Music when he met his roommate, who played acoustic guitar and wrote terribly sad songs. Inspired by John's musical musings, Chris sold his upright bass for $5,000, used some of that money to buy an acoustic guitar, then spent the next year wrestling his personal demons.

The Airborne Toxic Event
Formed in 2006, The Airborne Toxic Event has quickly become the darling of its native Los Angeles. The five-piece indie rock band, named after a section of the book White Noise by Don DeLillo, began with just one member, novelist Mikel Jollett. Bombarded with a fistful of bad news, he was inspired to turn his attention from writing prose to writing songs. Four band members later, Airborne had created a harmony of string instruments, keyboards and a standard rock lineup of guitar, drums, and bass.

"A lot of bands have something to say," explains TV On The Radio producer/multi-instrumentalist David Sitek. "We have something to ask." Indeed. Good luck finding easy answers in TVOTR's ever-evolving soundscapes, though, whether we're talking about their new disc, Dear Science (DGC/Interscope) or the band's early days. When guitarist/vocalist Kyp Malone joined, he didn't even get what Sitek and vocalist Tunde Adebimpe were going for on their self-released 2002 debut, OK Calculator.

Now, he's made it the defining theme of his enchanting new album, Saturdays=Youth.

Heartless Bastards
Fat Possum Records is excited to announce that the Heartless Bastards are set to release their third record on February 3rd, 2009. The record is called The Mountain and was produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail of Dead, Patty Griffin). The Mountain delivers the swamped-up rock howl that fans have come to love from the critically acclaimed Heartless Bastards, but it also weaves in an adventurous sonic evolution, expanding their three-piece rock palate by adding pedal steel, mandolin, banjo and strings, all in support of Erika Wennerstrom's transcendent voice that Rolling Stone once described as "channeling all the swagger and spit of a young Robert Plant."

The Pica Beats
For all there is to be said about the power of the present in the endlessly cannibalizing tradition of pop music, it's often the uncanny intangibility of timelessness that so separates the wheat from the chaff - a music aware of both the past and present, and yet discernibly apart from either moment in time. It is a tightrope tread by many, and often with perilous consequence. And yet, in the most literal sense of the word, timelessness is the very currency Seattle's The Pica Beats make their stock in trade: that is, a sound both of and apart from our time.

BLK JKS defy description. With a wrecking crew rhythm section, debonair vocals, and guitar concoction of one part shred and two parts soul, BLK JKS shoot an African music sensibility through the tenets of rock. On one hand it is easy to politicize BLK JKS; as seen on the cover of Fader, here is a band that is instantly young, black and fly even as they reclaim styles that have been stolen, watered down, and regurgitated for generations. And yet to get caught up in anything but their sound is to sell this phenomenon short, because as musicians--as artists--BLK JKS simply cook.
